Aid and Attendance is a federal pension supplement

VA Aid and Attendance provides a monthly payment added to the amount of a qualifying monthly VA pension for eligible Veterans and survivors. VA says a person may qualify when receiving a VA pension and needing another person for daily activities, being substantially bedridden, living in a nursing home because of disability-related mental or physical loss, or meeting the stated visual-impairment standard (VA Aid and Attendance information).

It is not automatically available to every Veteran needing long-term care. VA directs applicants to apply for Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits and describes the payment as an addition to pension, so the underlying pension eligibility and medical facts matter (VA Aid and Attendance information; VA application guidance).

Idaho has four State Veterans Homes

The Idaho Division of Veterans Services operates four Idaho Veterans Homes in Boise, Lewiston, Pocatello, and Post Falls. The division says the homes provide medical and supportive care to veterans who can no longer provide for themselves, and it provides one admission application for the four homes (Idaho Division of Veterans Services homes).

State Veterans Home admission and payment sources are separate questions from federal Aid and Attendance and Medicaid eligibility. A family should ask the individual home, VA, and DHW how the actual income and benefits will be treated instead of assuming that a VA award is ignored or paid directly to a facility.

Idaho's disabled-veteran property-tax benefit

For 2026, the Idaho Tax Commission says a qualifying Idaho homeowner veteran with a 100% service-connected disability, or 100% compensation due to individual unemployability, may receive up to $1,500 off property taxes on a home and up to one acre. The benefit has no income limit, requires a current homeowner's exemption, and requires the veteran to own and live in the primary residence by April 15, 2026 (Idaho Tax Commission disabled-veteran benefit).

The Tax Commission says the 2026 application period was January 1 through April 15 and that a qualifying veteran living in a care facility or nursing home may be eligible in some circumstances. It also says the benefit does not reduce solid-waste, irrigation, or other government fees (Idaho Tax Commission disabled-veteran benefit).

Neither the VA page nor the Idaho tax page establishes the Medicaid treatment of a particular Aid and Attendance award or property-tax benefit. Request a current DHW budget determination before counting either as a Medicaid planning result.
