Montana has three State Veterans Homes

DPHHS materials identify three State Veterans Homes: Montana Veterans’ Home in Columbia Falls, Southwest Montana Veterans Home in Butte, and Eastern Montana Veterans Home in Glendive. A 2025 DPHHS facilities presentation describes all three as CMS and VA certified (DPHHS Health Facilities presentation).

That presentation lists 105 intermediate/skilled-care beds plus 12 domiciliary beds at the Columbia Falls home; 60 intermediate/skilled-care beds at the Butte home; and 80 intermediate/skilled-care beds, including a 16-bed special-care unit, at the Glendive home (DPHHS Health Facilities presentation).

The individual facility pages confirm that the Columbia Falls home is Medicare/Medicaid and VA certified, and that the Glendive home is CMS and VA certified. Payment, admission, and Medicaid financial eligibility remain case-specific questions even where a facility has those certifications (Montana Veterans’ Home; Eastern Montana Veterans Home).

Montana property-tax relief for qualifying disabled veterans

Montana’s Disabled Veterans Assistance Program reduces the property-tax rate on a qualifying home for a veteran with a 100% service-connected disability or an eligible unmarried surviving spouse. The 2026 program requires ownership or a purchase contract, primary-residence occupancy for at least seven months, a VA disability letter, and satisfaction of the published income thresholds (Montana Department of Revenue MDV program).

The 2026 MDV page lists maximum 2024 federal adjusted gross income of $62,598 for a single applicant, $72,229 for married or head-of-household applicants, and $54,573 for an unmarried surviving spouse. It says the reduction can be 100%, 80%, 70%, or 50% of the normal tax rate depending on income and status, and applications are due April 15 (Montana Department of Revenue MDV program).

Do not assume VA and Medicaid use the same budget

Montana’s institutional Medicaid PETI policy lists a $50 personal-needs allowance and an additional exclusion of up to $90 monthly in VA pension income for a veteran, with VA pension income above $90 countable in that budget. This rule is not a substitute for a full eligibility or patient-liability determination (DPHHS ABD 805-2 PETI policy).

VA Aid and Attendance, a State Veterans Home, a property-tax benefit, and Montana Medicaid are different programs. Ask the specific home, VA, and DPHHS how the actual income, award, and residence facts will be handled before counting any benefit as a final care-payment result.
