Michigan operates three state veterans' homes
Michigan Veteran Homes lists three state-run homes: Michigan Veteran Homes at Chesterfield Township, Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids, and Michigan Veteran Homes D.J. Jacobetti in Marquette. The official locations page describes services including skilled nursing, long- and short-term care, rehabilitation and therapy, and dementia or memory care (Michigan Veteran Homes locations).
Confirmed Medicaid intersection: BEM 546 gives a $90 nursing-facility patient allowance to a veteran receiving VA Improved Pension, compared with the general $60 allowance. The research did not confirm Michigan's treatment of Aid & Attendance cash income for Medicaid eligibility, so it should not be stated as settled Michigan policy here (
MDHHS BEM 546).
The disabled-veteran homestead exemption can matter
Michigan's disabled-veteran exemption provides a 100% property-tax exemption on a qualifying veteran's homestead, with no partial-exemption tier. The veteran must meet residency, discharge, and one of the stated VA-certified disability or housing-assistance criteria (MCL 211.7b; Michigan State Tax Commission FAQ).
The exemption has no asset or income means test and is requested on Form 5107 through the local city or township assessor. Michigan's published guidance says that from January 1, 2025, an exemption once granted remains in effect without annual reapplication until rescinded or eligibility ends (Michigan Treasury Disabled Veteran Exemption; State Tax Commission Bulletin 19 of 2023).
Keep VA and Medicaid analyses separate
Michigan's current confirmed nursing-facility rule concerns the $90 allowance for recipients of VA Improved Pension. The broader question of whether Aid & Attendance income is counted for Michigan Medicaid eligibility was not confirmed against a Michigan BEM income section, so a general multi-state answer should not replace state-specific review (MDHHS BEM 546).
See Florida's VA Aid & Attendance page for a comparison, and see VA Aid & Attendance for the wider benefit context. Coordinate VA, Medicaid, tax, and facility decisions before acting.
Not mutually exclusive. Most families combine two or three funding pillars — this one rarely stands alone.
