Assisted living vs. nursing home: how the funding differs

Assisted living and nursing homes look similar from the outside, but they're paid for very differently.

Medicare doesn't pay for assisted living at all. Medicaid covers nursing home care in every state, while help with assisted living depends on state waiver programs that often have waiting lists. Long-term care insurance and VA benefits can help with both.
